Atmaram was the father of late Nandu Bhende, a popular rock singer. Bhende, fondly referred to as Bapu, was born on May 7, He completed his engineering from VJTI in He worked as an engineer in several organizations and retired as a senior executive from the Indian Oil Corporation in
Bhende was the joint secretary of the Marathi Natya Parishad between and was also the first one to make use of the concept of revolving stage in Marathi theatre.
He had been active on the stage in the capacity of director, actor and producer for the last 60 years and was known for his versatility. He directed and produced more than 70 plays, including some for children.
In s and early 50s, Bhende tried to infuse new life in Marathi theatre by his experimental plays which earned him the reputation of being a ‘pioneer of the experimental Marathi theatre’.

He was also among the first Marathi stage artists to work and leave a mark in English theatre. Some of his popular plays include ‘Dinuchya Sasubai Radhabai’, ‘Tarun Turka Mhatare Arka’, ‘Tujhe Aahe Tujapashi’, ‘Zopi gelela Jaga Zala’ and ‘Pala Pala Kon Pudhe Pale’.
Bhende was a regular in radio plays for 55 years and also produced several radio plays for the Mumbai station of All India Radio. He acted in several Marathi television plays and in Hindi television serials like “Yatra” and “Chunouti”.
He directed a television film “Sparsha” in the serial “Ek Kahani” and many others. His latest contribution was Marathi serial “Awhan” which threw light on the evils of dowry system.
He also directed a tele-serial, ‘Ratrani’, which is based on a story of well known Marathi writer G A Kulkarni.
In recent years, Bhende was seen in Raju Hirani’s ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, in which he plays the lonely man who is dumped outside the Second Innings home by his son. Bhende and his wife Asha appeared in several advertisements together, the most recent being the one where Bhende - a grandfather is seen gifting a diamond ring to his wife (played by Asha) on Valentine’s Day.
